Turmeric is a spice which is common for the Indian cuisine and it has yellow color and is a pigmented curry spice. But it can be used for many more purposes besides cooking. It can be used as a natural remedy and it was used in the Ayurvedic medicine and the traditional Chinese medicine.

In the tradicional medicine, it has been used as a treatment for: healing wounds, pain in the joints, sprained muscles, respiratory and gastrointestinal ailments, treating skin problems and for liver disease.

In the medical literature you can find numerous medical benefits of turmeric, and its compound- curcumin also has many health benefits, and with numerous studies it has been show that it actually improves the overall health and can help treat many medical conditions.

Curcumin has more than 150 therapeutic properties such as: antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and maybe the most important is the anti-cancer which has been the subject of many conducted studies.

Why is curcumin so powerful medicine?

During many researches were discovered a lot of different action mechanisms, and the reason why curcumin are so powerful is because of its capability to:

  • Regulate over 160 distinct physiological actions
  • Regulate over 700 genes
  • Reorder the cells’ membranes
  • Improve signaling molecules: and it can cooperate directly with: cell survival proteins, many carrier proteins and metal ions, DNA and RNA, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV1) integrase and protease, histone, and inflammatory molecules.

Because of these abilities of curcumin, it has a very positive effect on the overall health in different ways, and it can also treat and hinder many illnesses.

Another study showed that curcumin has therapeutic properties for other diseases like: inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, lung and liver diseases, and autoimmune disorders.

Turmeric can help in the fight with Alzheimer’s disease and many more inflammatory diseases.

Curcumin has the ability to go over the blood-brain barrier, and due to this many scientists have studied its ability as a neuroprotective agent for neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Curcumin can also improve the health of the brain due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Newest studies conducted on animals show that turmeric contains another substance besides curcumin which can also act as a neuroprotective agent with Alzheimer’s disease.

This is called aromatic turmerone and it has the ability to promote the growth of endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC), and with the help of these cells it can improve the health of the brain with its repairing and regenerative properties.

Adele Rueger, an author says that there are many substances that are considered to encourage proliferation of stem cells of the brain, but not many medications can actually encourage the separation of stem cells into neurons, which is maybe the highest aim in the regenerative medicine.

With the discovery of the properties of the aromatic turmerone the medicine they are actually closer to reaching their goal.

Curcumin is also very beneficial. A study has proved that curcumin can prevent the buildup of the devastating beta-amyloids inside the brain of patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, and it can also clean the accumulated plaque which is related with Alzheimer’s disease.

The brain has increased level of inflammation in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients, and curcumin can actually help treat the inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

It also prevents the hormones and enzymes that regulate inflammation, and it also hinders the inflammatory metabolic byproducts of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX) enzymes and the activity.

Osteoarthritis is another condition which can be treated with the help of curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties. In 2011, a study was conducted in order to test the ability of curcumin to relieve pain and it showed that just 200mg of curcumin per day can actually help with pain and improve the mobility.

Another study also showed different benefit of curcumin, this time to stop the pathways of the inflammation, and to stop the spreading of the protein responsible for pain and swelling.

Also curcumin is very powerful in the fight against all cancers.

Curcumin has strong anti-cancer properties. In the medical literature are listed many benefits of curcumin and its use in treating cancer of any other nutrient, like the vitamin D. Dr. William LaValley — cancer physician of natural medicine, stated that curcumin is equally effective for all types of cancer. This is a very strange thing, because cancer has numerous different molecular pathologies.

Curcumin’s property to impact different molecular targets, on different pathways, is the reason for the anti-cancer tendency. When the curcumin goes into a cell, it impacts it in 100 distintc molecular ways.

And as Dr. LaValley says, it does not matter of the curcumin molecule leads an elevation if the activity of a separate molecular target, or it lowers or prevent the activity, in the end it still causes an anti-cancer activity.

The good news is that curcumin only has an effect on the bad cells and it does not affect the healthy cells, because it is not toxic, which actually means that it has the ability to choose only the cancer cells, and this is a very positive thing in the cancer fight.
It can also interact with other chemotherapy drugs for better result, and promoting the liquidation of cancer cells.

Curcumin has antimicrobial properties

Curcumin can also be very helpful for the health of the digestive system, and can treat many health problems which are a result of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori), like gastric cancer, peptic ulcer and asgastritis. H.pylori is very common condition worldwide and the World Health Organization has marked it as Group 1 carcinogen.

These types of infections are cured with antibiotics, but recently they have become less helpful due to the rise of drug resistance.

Fortunately, curcumin can step up here as a practical alternative. In 2009, a study revealed that curcumin can help to prevent the growth of H. pylori in vitro.

A research on mice proved that curcumin has powerful therapeutic properties against h. pylori infection, and it treated the infection successfully and eliminated the bacterium completely and repaired the damage that was caused to the gastric system.

Honey also has numerous health benefits that we do not know about, and it is recommended in raw form.

A mixture of raw honey and the amazing turmeric can help with digestion and promote the development of good bacteria in the intestines. Its best property is the anti-inflammatory and it can boost the immune system and also eliminate the bacteria viruses. And it does not have any side-effects on the intestinal micro-flora.
